CHAPTER 18

“Aren’t you going to invite me in?”

Katrice choked back the bile that had risen in her throat and was threatening to make her gag. “What are you doing here?”

“I’m here to see you, sweetheart. Talk about explaining the obvious.”

“Things aren’t always the way they seem,” Katrice remarked sarcastically.

Greg ignored the remark and asked again, “Are you going to invite me in or would you prefer I take you into my arms right here on the front porch and kiss those beautiful lips of yours in front of the whole world? I’ll bet your neighbor would get a big kick out of that.” Greg bent his head toward Mrs. Parkins’s yard and winked.

Katrice made no attempt to hide her disgust as she looked past Greg and saw her neighbor peering over the hedges with clippers in her hand. She stepped back, mumbling, “Come in.”

Greg sauntered into the foyer and surveyed the surroundings. “Nice place. Not quite what I expected, but very homey.”

Katrice couldn’t believe the overwhelming sense of hurt and anger that she felt upon seeing Greg. The lies, the deceit, the complete obliteration of trust—everything he had dragged into her life over their last year together—still gnawed at her down to her very soul.

“What are you doing here, Greg?”

“I told you. I’m here to see you, darling.”

Katrice cringed. Greg made a point of using his most condescending tone and referring to her as “baby” and “darling” when he was being smug. His smugness had always been annoying. Now it just bothered her that he still thought it had some impact. But she was more bothered by the fact that he had the nerve to show up on her doorstep after all this time. What could he be after? Then she remembered the message her mother had left on her voice mail.

I spoke with Greg the other day. You really need to give him a call…He’s not taking the break-up well….

After six months, she’d hoped he’d moved on. Apparently this wasn’t the case.

“You’ve seen me, now you can go tell my mother that I’m alive and well and haven’t been committed to a mental hospital. By the way, you might also want to mention to her how manipulative, deceitful, and downright vile you are.”

“I don’t deserve that, Katrice.”

Staring at Greg in disbelief, she was absolutely speechless.

“You never gave me a chance to explain everything that happened.”

“What’s to explain, Greg? On top of everything else you had done, you decided to add infidelity to your list of infractions. You not only lost your job due to your inability to control your urges, you managed to destroy our relationship in the process.”

“Sweetheart—”

She was beginning to hate that word. “Just stop it, Greg, okay? Whatever you have to say is going to be a complete waste of breath and will probably make my head explode just trying to figure out the difference between the big lies and the really, really big lies.”

“Katrice, I came all this way. At the very least you can hear me out.
